The sound fields of a live performance are compared to their reproduction in home listening rooms by conventional front-firing and (omni)radial loudspeakers. The objective and subjective effects of acoustic and psychoacoustic correction of spectral imbalance and listening room distortion of spatial perspective are reviewed. A novel cost-effective 360° radial reflex Orthospectral midrange/treble driver is described. It is concluded that radial Orthospectral, psychoacoustically room-compensated loudspeakers provide a perception of reality notably superior to that of conventional front-firing loudspeaker systems.
