Prior to 1979, the sound system in the Fairfield Hall, Croydon, London, had been of the simplest kind. Since the hall was opened in 1962, this consisted essentially of small column loudspeakers flanking the stage, with a separate horn loaded system for film sound, which was placed centrally on the auditorium. This paper will describe the particular characteristics of the hall, whose acoustics have been highly praised, and the considerations involved in providing a main audience and stage sound system.
