Signal Analysis and a New Spectral Test Function

Document Thumbnail

The ordinary concept of the frequency spectrum of a signal may often be confusing in practice. Periodic signals are of infinite duration and are composed of harmonic components also of infinite duration. Practical signals appear as a result of observations, which are finite in time and might, therefore, have spectra which are different from the periodic case. This paper gives a little further explanation by introducing a -running- spectrum, ie a time dependant spectrum. It also introduces a new type of spectral test function which is an inherently rectangular filtering function and whose time waveform is its own correlation. Spectral properties, including -running- spectra, will be shown, together with practical applications of the new signal.
