Phase shift between left and right channels of stereophonic sound in an inescapable consequence of multitrack analog magnetic tape recording. Such phase shift causes improper addition of the left and right signals when the signals are summed for monophonic reproduction. Various levels of fixed phase error and phase jitter were introduced into monophonically reproduced music, and a high level of correlation was observed between phase error levels and listener's scores, with a greater sensitivity to jitter than to fixed phase error.
