Determining Noise Source By Its Power Level Distribution

This paper has focused primarily on the measurement of sound power. It is not sufficient to measure the sound pressure level at a given distance from the source. The sound pressure level at a given distance from a source differs according to the size and the room in which it is placed, the amount of sound absorption in the room, and other factors. The most useful noise emission characteristic is the sound power level of the source. Specifying the noise emission in terms of sound power level minimizes the effect of environmental conditions, and thus tends to minimize the chance of any understanding between the manufacturer and the purchaser of machinery or equipment.
