A survey avoiding mathematical detail is given of general results and the large remaining areas of ignorance when the modern theory of nonlinear systems is applied to understanding the yet mysterious properties of human hearing. It is observed that novel ideas from the frontiers of mathematical research confirm the intuition of Heyser that the ears may behave as a pattern recognition device acting on geometrical spaces of two or more dimensions, although the mathematics involved turns out to be highly nonlinear.
