Psychoacoustic tests have indicated the performance requirements for audio digitizing systems. Their design, however, is not straight-forward. Performance limitations are set by economics, limitations on recorder bit rate, imperfections in converter quantizing characteristics, amplifier noise and distortion, aliasing, anti-aliasing filters, timing jitter, glitches, ranging errors and other subtle sources of distortion. Unrealistic user specifications can exact a severe economic penalty.
