The Use of Magnetic Fluids in Loudspeaker Design

Document Thumbnail

Ferro-magnetic fluids can be used in the design of moving coil loudspeakers to increase the damping on the moving system, and in some cases to increase the electrical power dissipation capability of the voice coil. The magnetic fluid is contained within the annular voice coil air gap by the speakers magnetic field and thus envelops the portions of the voice coil within the air gap. The fluid shearing stree results in a viscous damping force on the moving system. The fluid also provides an improved heat sink for the voice coil which may increase the thermal power rating of the speaker.
