High-Frequency Variance: A Program-Dependent Signal Deterioration Mode in Analog Magnetic Tape Recording

Document Thumbnail

This paper describes a signal deterioration effect in analog magnetic tape recording which, while not previously unknown, has only recently been quantified and studied in detail. The effect, termed -high-frequency variance-, can be described as a program-dependent variation in high-frequency record sensitivity of magnetic tape. A study was initiated at the CBS Technology Center designed to quantify high-frequency variance, identify its contributing factors and make recommendations to eliminate or reduce its effects. This paper describes the study performed and the conclusions reached.
