Total Distortion in Linear Systems: A Novel Approach in Performance Evaluation
A novel method of measuring ultimate quality of real-time linear systems is presented in which output of system is related with input. Bandwidth limited white noise is used for test signal, thus allowing for all distortion generators in the system to be excited and their products presented at the system output as error signal. The so derived "total distortion factor" describes with one single number the ultimate qualities of system for reproduction purposes and other linear applications, thus eliminating the need for separate measurements of THD, TIM, bandwidth, slew rate, S/N, etc.
