A state-of-the-art delta modulator, operating t the same clock rates required for PCM, offers advantages in the audio-to-digital conversion process. For example, a delta modulator does not require multi-pole anti-aliasing filters. Also, digital errors, such as tape dropouts, do not create as much havoc as with PCM-in most applications errors need not be corrected. The cost of a delta modulator is far less than that of a 16-bit ADC (linear or floating point).
