Amplifying a Symphony Orchestra with Pickups

Document Thumbnail

In 1977, Emerson, Lake and Palmer toured with a 60-piece orchestra plus doubles. Every instrument except brass and percussion had pickups. Requirements involved high-volume levels, lack of feedback and reproduction fidelity. The two pickup systems used were based on vibration and pressure. How this was accomplished and how the pickups work will be discussed in this paper.
