Bridging the Gap Between the VU Meter and the PPM
A circuit configuration is described which assures constant UK/EBU quasi-peak readings while meter-behavior is independently varied. A rationale for "artistic behavior" is evolved, optimized in the design of a "Headroom Meter," then translated to obtain lively and accurate quasi-peak readings from unmodified VU Meters. Options are described which extend the usefulness of program-level meters while retaining the convergence of VU meter and PPM design-objectives.
