A portable system for the performance of electroacoustic music is presented. The system is based upon a 16-bit microprocessor which controls a specially designed digital sound synthesizer. The system is designed so as to facilitate real-time interpretation of precomposed material. Through the use of techniques derived from interactive computer graphics, a musician is able to express gestures affecting performance variables (such as tempo, articulation, and dynamics), in a clear and congenial manner. A brief review of previous work in the field is included, along with a discussion of design issues and suggestions for further research.
