Design Criteria of a Universal Compandor for the Elimination of Audible Noise in Tape, Disc, and Broadcast Systems

Document Thumbnail

The requirements of a compansion system for the elimination of audible noise in recordings and broadcasts are described. These criteria include improved high-frequency headroom of the medium, relative insensitivity to gain and phase errors of the medium, and superior listenability of the compressed signal. Both static and transient design parameters of compandors are discussed in relation to these criteria. Existing compandors are compared with these requirements. A computer simulation is presented to compare transient performance of rms, average, and peak detection.
