The High-Fidelity User Looks at Pickup Design

Document Thumbnail

A good high-fidelity pickup must have more than wide-frequency response. Low distortion is vital. Low tracking force is clearly desirable as reducing record and stylus wear, but it must not be attained at the expense of good tracking in loud passages. High lateral compliance and low moving mass must not result in a fragile cartridge. The improvements in pickup desing, as well as undesirable compromises, are discussed from the standpoint of the user who is interested in listening to good music.
