This paper reports on the new audio tape cartridge format, ELCASET, developed jointly by Matsushita Electric Industrial Company, Ltd., Sony Corporation, and Teac Corporation. There have been several tape cartridge formats made available for the audio industry...4-track, 8-track, "Sound Tape Cartridge" by RCA, "Compact Cassette" by Philips, etc. Among them the Compact Cassette system has become very popular due to its simple operation and remarkable improvement in its performance specifications. However, because of its basic construction and physical specifications which limit flexibility in designing the tape recorders, it now seems that there is little room left for further improvement of the performance of this system. The Elcaset system has been developed to eliminate the design limitations in the Compact Cassette system so as to obtain higher performance specs while maintaining the cartridge convenience. New provisions are added to satisfy future requirements of operational convenience or added functions.
