With the advent of low-cost data conversion ICs, signal processing capability under digital control will become of increasingly greater significance to the audio circuit designer. While in general data converter ICs are optimized for data acquisition applications, a number of the currently available types can progress audio signals directly or indirectly. This paper reviews the performance requirements of data converters with emphasis on audio signal handling characteristics and the implications pertinent to their optimized use in audio. Standard industry devices are discussed within the context of a number of audio signal control functions.
