Ultrasound in Retinal Detachment Surgery

Document Thumbnail

Two possible uses of ultrasonic energy in the treatment of retinal detachment are discussed. First, removal of ocular hemorrhage by ultrasound has been achieved in the anterior chamber of animal and human eyes. The use of ultrasound may also be a possibility in the treatment of massive vitreous hemorrhage sometimes found in retinal detachment and diabetes mellitus. Second, the radiation pressure effect of ultrasound may be useful in retrodisplacing a retinal displacement. Results of retinal research in both these fields are discussed.
