Mechanical Playback Losses and the Design of Wideband Phonograph Pickups

All mechanical playback losses fall into just two categories, termed mechanical pickup loss and scanning loss. The rational design of wideband pickups is discussed in view of our present understanding of these losses. Preliminary results in the computer-aided design of optimum stylus assemblies are also briefly described.
