Knowledge of tape mechanical properties is an invaluable asset in providing superior tape cartridge operation. To provide information on those tape mechanical properties most influencing cartridge performance, a new device and associated procedures have been developed for measuring friction, abrasion and lubricant-to-backing adhesion. Static, slow-speed (.01 in/s) dynamic friction measurements and high-speed (60 in/s) dynamic friction measurements have been made on various tapes. In conjunction with these measurements, data has been taken on tape abrasion and lubricant-to-backing adhesion at a speed of 30 in/s.
