High-Quality Professional Recording Using New Digital Techniques

Document Thumbnail

The problem of high-quality professional recording of audio is approached by new methods for both digitizing and storing on magnetic tape. These methods and the system which implements them are described. The resulting system achieves a high dynamic range and wide bandwidth, yet is economical, reliable, and better than present analog techniques. The method of digitizing is economically superior to linear analog-to-digital conversion and more accurate than such well-known nonlinear analog-to-digital converters as log amplifiers. The method of storing combines high bit packing density with a unique encoding scheme. This combination enables the storage and accurate recovery of digitized audio while working within the constraints of available professional tape transport mechanisms. Applications for the new methods in the field of professional audio as well as in other fields are discussed.
