Deriving Engine Power from a Cockpit Voice Recording in an Accident Investigation

"Aircraft engine power history during an accident flight was developed using audio recorded by a cockpit voice recorder. Sounds in the recorded audio were associated with frequencies produced by various engine components to obtain an estimate for engine power. Practical techniques such as multi-channel frequency spectrum layering, and the overlaying of computed data onto spectrogram imagery, are discussed. The results of the study supported the conclusion that the engines were operating normally on the accident flight.
