In this paper we investigate possibilities and limitations in terms of elevated sound source reproduction using higher order Ambisonics and practical loudspeaker configurations. Reconstructed sound fields are analysed from the point of view of reproduced energy, sound field reconstruction error and distortion of high frequency spectrum which contains the crucial cues for determining source vertical angle. Results show that although in all cases the theoretical sound field reproduction at the sweet spot is satisfactory, the listening area limitations with significant spectral distortion which are particularly detrimental to high frequency content may lead to severe deterioration of vertical sound source localisation. This paper performs the theoretical analysis of the problem using sound field simulations and binaural analysis.
