A Fast Method for the Determination of the Intelligibility of Running Speech

Document Thumbnail

A physical method for measuring the quality of speech transmission channels, including halls, is presented. The method uses the power spectrum of the envelope of running speech, quantifying the intensity function within specific audio bands. The method was tested for a variety of distortions, including noise interference, reverberation, single echoes, and peak-clipping. For each condition, the deterioration of the envelope spectrum was expressed by one figure. These values appeared to correlate highly with the scores of speech intelligibility tests for the same conditions.
