A Hybrid Electroacoustic Lumped and Finite Element Model for Modeling Loudspeaker Drivers

We present a hybrid method for modeling the acoustic characteristics of a loudspeaker driver. The method uses an electroacoustic lumped circuit model for the magnet, voice coil, and spider system. This includes the electrical and mechanical properties. The lumped model is coupled to a finite element (FE) model of the speaker cone and surrounding air. The diaphragm, dust cap, and outer suspension are modeled using shell elements. The two models are solved simultaneously and fully coupled using COMSOL Multiphysics. This results in a realistic relation between the acoustic load on the diaphragm and the velocity of the diaphragm. The model enables fast modeling an optimization of a new diaphragm designs in terms of vibration modes, response, and directivity characteristics.
