Magnetic Recording Tape: The Influence of the Magnetic Coating Thickness Upon Signal Parameters

Document Thumbnail

An empirical study has been made of the dependence on the thickness of the magnetic coating of bias, sensitivity, response, output at saturation, distortion, print-through, and noise. It is shown that for audio and instrumentation (analog) tapes, where the record head gap is sufficiently long, the greatest percentage of the variations observed in measured parameters is due to the variation in the thickness of the magnetic coatings. In some cases, requirements are such that specification limits require resolutions in coating thickness measurements which are almost unobtainable.
