Losses and Coupling in Long Multiwire Loudspeaker Cables

Document Thumbnail

It is not seldom in PA systems to use very long loudspeaker cables. These PA systems sometimes carry several audio signals in adjacent wires of the same cable, or several cables may be neighboring over very long distances such as several hundreds meters. This paper deals with losses and coupling in these long cables. Results of both numerical modeling and measurements are presented. It is shown that losses and coupling may introduce significant crosstalk, affect the amplifier impedance load and the radiation patterns of multichannel systems, depending on the cable characteristics and the assignment of the wires in a cable. Coupling between cables is also investigated, and strategies for reducing coupling are presented.
