Extraction of Pitch of Speech by Means of a Phase Locked Tracking Filter

Document Thumbnail

This paper deals with a new approach to the speech analysis in which the correlation between the frequency and the amplitude of the fundamental component of the speech sound wave is investigated. The extraction of the parameters has been carried out in real-time by the use of the instrument described here. Two d.c. voltages proportional respectively to the measure of the frequency and of the amplitude of the fundamental component are available at the outputs and have been used to feed an analog computer for the calculation of the correlation coefficient. A strong correlation between the two parameters has been found in the measurements carried out on the normal speech of different speakers. This result could be related to an intrinsic feature of the sound-source in the speech production.
