Coherent Multichannel Emulation of Acoustic Spaces

Document Thumbnail

We propose a new methodology for emulating the impression of a performance in a given auditorium using studio recordings. Play-back signals are generated by convolving dry source signals with impulse responses of the auditorium between source locations and an array of microphones. The design of the microphone array used to acquire impulse responses is critical to the success of the method and we investigate this topic in detail. The reproduction takes place over a speaker system which performs additional diffusion of the reverberant part of the sound field for enhancement of the envelopment experience. Critical listening experiments demonstrate that the proposed technique is very effective in terms of the capability of a listener to localize a sound source and a sense of extended auditory space.
