The specification of talking and listening levels for face-to-face as well as for system communication is meaningful only to the extent that the conditions involved are also specified. Thus, the use of 64 dB above 0.0002 µbar as the level of -conversational speech at a meter- may be in error by some 15 dB or more under certain circumstances. The influence of such factors as ambient noise, system gain, assigned task, etc., in establishing meaningful levels is outlined.
