An Improved Theatre Type Loudspeaker System

Document Thumbnail

A theater type loudspeaker system is described with improved features by comparison with now existing and operating designs. High quality two-way theater type loudspeaker systems have now been in use for over 30 years. The experience of their uses in both theaters and sound reinforcement system provides information for a third generation design. Extended frequency range, more uniform distribution, lower distortion and greater reliability were design objectives. A decrease in the overall dimensions without compromise in the four basic objectives would allow greater application in limited space. The objectives have been achieved. The most outstanding improvement is in uniformity of distribution on both high and low frequency radiation and extended low and high frequency response. A design is described using a two-way system with a crossover at 500 Hz. The low frequency portion uses four 15 ft. cone driver units mounted in a 80 cubic foot closed box. The high frequencies are radiated from a driver unit mounted on a short sectoral horn.
