Determination of an Effective Tone Ringer Signal

Document Thumbnail

This paper describes a study to determine a frequency spectrum for a multiple tone ringing signal which yields the maximum detectability for a given acoustic power. Measurements of pertinent noise spectra and transmission loss at telephone locations were made and compared with data in the literature. The theory of critical band masking was used to predict the detectability of telephone ringing signals in a noisy environment. It was concluded that multi tone signals in the 500-4500 Hz region can meet detectability and pleasantness requirements in present noise environments.
