Knowledge of tape mechanical properties is an invaluable asset in providing superior tape cartridge operation. To provide information on those tape mechanical properties most influencing cartridge performance, a new device and associated procedures has been developed for measuring friction, abrasion, and lubration-to-backing adhesion. Static, slow speed dynamic (.01 ips), and high speed dynamic (60 ips) friction measurements have been made on various tapes. In association with these measurements, data on tape abrasion and lubrication-to-backing adhesion at a speed of 30 ips has been taken.
