Various methods of making distortion measurements on broadcasting audio facilities are compared in an extensive series of tests. A distortion generator unit which simulates many types of nonlinearities common to audio facilities is described. It is concluded that the harmonic distortion method gives a satisfactory indication of nonlinearity for many types of audio facilities, while the CCIF intermodulation method is superior for measurements of facilities having restricted hf response. The SMPTE intermodulation method is found to be unsatisfactory as an indicator of hf nonlinearity.
