An overview of the technologies adopted in multichannel audo coding is presented. New trends, including increased audio sample resolution and sampling rate, are discussed. Different channel configurations, their advantages and disadvantages, and their impact on the system data rates and capacity are examined. Emerging audio format ssuch as DVD-Audio are introduced. Finally, applications of multichannel audio and new directions in music are examined.
