Many studies are available on the effect of the cone shape on the sound pressure response of a direct-radiator loudspeaker. However, there has been considerably less work on the effect imparted by changing cone thickness. The effect that a variation in cone-body thickness has on the sound pressure response of a 10-in (254-mm) loudspeaker employing a felted paper cone body was investigated. The cone thickness was varied using two different methods, and the changes in the response were examined. The effect of cone pressing was also examined. It was found that a small change in the thickness could have a large impact on the on-axis sound pressure response, indicating that thickness is an important variable that loudspeaker designers can apply to improve performance.
