Conventional analog editing is normally accomplished by cutting and splicing. This angled splice provides the desirable characteristic of a smooth transition between the old and new signal. With the coming of age of multichannel digital tape recorders, editing must be accomplished via a dubbing process. Such recorders provide this smooth transition totally in the digital domain by synchronously re-recording and fading out the old signal while the new signal is faded in. Implementation of the cross-fade utilizes a write-after-read head, digital multipliers, adders, and control electronics.
