How Much has Amplitude Distribution of Music Changed?

Document Thumbnail

It has been questioned whether the amplitude distribution of music has changed. Statistics of contemporary music may be signfiicantly different from the program statistics previously used as a basis for determining the appropriate preemphasis in audio systems. This paper describes the results of measurements on the instantaneous signal level of old and new program material. The measurements are carried out before and after preemphasis according to CCITT J17 and the usual 50 us. They indicate that CCIT preemphasis with 6 dB gain at high frequencies, proposed for digital broadcasting systems, may increase channel capability.
