Dropouts at Low Tape Speeds

Document Thumbnail

As extremely low tape speeds are frequently used in magnetic tape instrumentation systems, a study of level dropouts at 0.1, 0.2, 15/16 and 1 7/8 ips tape speeds was considered warranted. The low frequencies involved at these low speeds permit the complete waveform to be charted and analyzed in detail. The duration of the dropout is not proportional to the dropout level as anticipated. The majority of the dropouts have a duration which is dependent on the wavelength of the recorded signal.
