The German DBS Digital Sound-Broadcasting System: Audio Coding Methods
The available bit rate on the DBS sound system permits the transmission of 16 stereo sound channels based on a word length of 14 bit/sample. Using uniform coding you indeed will obtain a satisfying sound quality. Nevertheless, an important improvement of quality can be achieved by the introduction of a scale factor, which requires only a very low amount of extra bit rate but offers a dramatic increase of resistance against bit errors and leads furthermore to a very flexible system which enables to widen the dynamic range of the transmission system considerably.
