Optimizing the Dynamic Characteristics of a Phonograph Pickup

Document Thumbnail

The principal means of evaluating phonograph pickup performance has been through frequency response and low-frequency compliance measurements. This paper discusses the limitations of these techniques and suggests additional criteria to provide a more meaningful picture of pickup performance. Emphasis is on the need for the stylus to properly track the groove modulation, and the problem of defining optimum dynamic response. The former is presented as a prerequisite which must be met before any other characteristics are considered. The latter is presented as the end objective of all functional characteristics combined in an optimum fashion.
