The Significance of Tonality Index and Non-linear Psychoacoustics Models for Masking Threshold Estimation

Document Thumbnail

This paper presents a method to improve the classical transform based psychoacoustics model to better suit the physiological ear model, which is more accurate in approximating the masking threshold obtained from the psycho acoustical measurement. The linear additivity assumption for simultaneous masking is identified as main reason behind the lower threshold obtained from a classical transform based PAM. Different method to estimate tonality index is investigated and the inclusion of its measure in the nonlinear psychoacoustics model is proposed. Subjective listening test proves that our non-linear PAM performs better than its linear counterparts.
