Archiving, Preservation, and Metadata Considerations for Information Appliances
We are creating audio by the gigabyte on top of a 100 years and many petabytes of recorded sound. We are already drowning in inaccessible bits and shedding master tapes. All new media should be designed with archiving, preservation and conservation of content issues in mind. Machine-readable media will need to be accessed by the humanists of the future. Technical design awareness ranges from error correction detection, implementing metadata protocols to design of content retrieval systems. How will we trace the culturally significant pop hit received on an IA device back to its master recording? When the 2001 models are in attics and garages, how do we play back the music? What features will allow for data migration of treasured content? As we upgrade, what information should we carry along that takes us back to the sound and/or feel of the "original"? In a world of perfect copies, the organization and preservation of music collections still remains a challenge.
