The Object-based MPEG-4 Standard is designed for usage in interactive environments, including those that require the highest efficiency and error resilience. MPEG-4 allows the combination of natural and synthetic content, and has built-in scalability. Mobile devices and Internet applications will benefit from these design points, as will broad-casting applications. The paper concludes with an outlook to the upcoming MPEG-7 and MPEG-21 standards.
