Depending on the bandwidth available and the type of application (from live streaming to music distribution), the quality of the Internet audio experience can vary dramatically, and different techniques can and should be used to insure the best audio experience for the listener. The authors discuss several of these techniques and their applications in qualitative terms, with examples including a selection of common data rates and encoding schemes.
