One of the problems with consumer playback of surround sound content is the equipment has limited types of multichannel inputs. Generally, a Toslink or S/PDIF input is used to carry a compressed multichannel audio stream. This paper describes how a consumer audio encoder that uses this digital channel can be created which balances performance and cost through proper algorithm design.
