Toward an Unbiased Standard in Testing Laptop PC Audio Quality

Document Thumbnail

For a rapidly growing population, laptop PCs and tablet devices have become a primary method for watching and listening to electronic media. Nonetheless, form factor restrictions and placing audio quality second to device functionality have left a gap in the overall quality of the listening experience. Multiple audio post-processing solutions exist from audio DSP developers that are included with laptop PCs from a specified manufacturer. These solutions aim to improve the audio experience for each device. However, the quality of audio produced by the outcome of these different post-processing solution/laptop PC pairings varies greatly. To date, there have been no blind systematic comparisons of the audio quality produced by laptop PCs and the subsequent pairing of a unique post-processing solution. Here we present an unbiased methodological approach for testing laptop PC devices and report results of audio quality for three different commercially available post-processing solutions as implemented on laptop PCs from two different manufacturers.
