Virtual 5.1 Channel Reproduction of Stereo Sound for Mobile Devices

Document Thumbnail

With rapid development in mobile devices, consumer demand for a premium sound experience is growing. In this paper, a method for 5.1 channel upmixing is introduced. First, the primary and ambience components are separated and the primary signal is decomposed into the standard 5.1 channel direction. Since all separated sources should appear in the upmixed output, we designed the new masking scheme for panning coefficient. In order to reproducing the 5.1 channel sound field in the earphone or headset, the decomposed multichannel signal is virtually rendered by means of HRTF. The proposed method was compared with conventional upmixing methods and demonstrated better spatiality image and panning effects with very low complexity requirements which allows easy implementation on a wide variety of platforms.
