Size and Shape of Listening Area Reproduced by Three-Dimensional Multichannel Sound System with Various Numbers of Loudspeakers

Document Thumbnail

A 22.2 multichannel sound system for Super Hi-Vision has been developed to reproduce an immersive and natural three-dimensional sound field that creates a sense of presence and reality. We are studying how to reproduce this sound field in the home recorded by 22.2 multichannel sound. When several people are watching a program together, their viewing positions will be different. Therefore, adequate quality of spatial impression should be maintained in a large area. We investigated the relationship between the number and placement of loudspeakers and the listening area. We built a system to reproduce 22.2 multichannel sound with reduced number of loudspeakers and performed evaluation tests to discover the relationship between spatial impression and listening position.
